WISER at Duke

The Duke-WISER connection.

Duke University Chapel

WISER operates as an independent Kenyan NGO, but remains closely tied to Duke University in Durham, North Carolina. Duke supported the development of the project and Duke students have been involved in the growth of WISER since its conception. Check back often to learn about what WISER is doing in cooperation with Duke University and how you can become a part of it.

A week of WISER.

One week. Ten girls. Empowered. WISER kicked off its first full-scale fundraising event at Duke Oct. 22-26, 2007 with the goal of raising enough money - $10,000 - for 10 girls’ scholarships. By the end of the week, the team surpassed that goal, raising a total of more than $12,000 to send 12 girls to WISER with scholarships. WISER Week will take place once a semester at Duke as a way to educate the Duke community about WISER and the issues surrounding girls education.

DukeEngage goes to Muhuru.

Eight Duke students spent their 2007 summer working with WISER in Muhuru Bay through DukeEngage. Students worked in specialty areas such as education strategy, leadership, health, construction, technology and microfinance. Check out their blog to read more about their personal experiences. WISER and DukeEngage plan to continue collaboration in the future to help Duke students spend significant time in Muhuru Bay.
